While chikan work goes as far back as the early 3rd century BC it was Noor Jahan the wife of Mughal emperor Jehangir who truly popularised this form of embroidery by introducing the Persian art in India in the 17th century. After the downfall of the Mughal Empire chikankari artisans spread all over India but Lucknow remained the main centre. The Lucknow chikankari technique involves block printing the design on to cloth using indigo dyes. Then comes the embroidery process with needlework tracing the ink patterns. Available in one classic colourway. (Fabric - Width: 134.5cm, Horizontal Pattern Repeat: 67cm, Vertical Pattern Repeat: 69cm204.00 per metre)

Although every effort has been made to ensure that the fabrics on this site are as close to the original cloth as possible, please be aware that the appearance of the fabric can vary from screen to screen. This is due to the inherent difficulties in creating accurate representations of fabric in a digital format. We would strongly recommend referring to our pattern books and swatches or requesting fabric samples before selecting a fabric.

After Treatments:

Sheen Upholstery Ltd strongly advises against the use of any further chemical treatment. Such treatments may adversely affect the wearing qualities and general performance of the fabric. We regret therefore, we are unable to accept responsibility for any fabrics treated by a third party in this way other than in its original manufacturing process.
